NASA midwest(where I'm a member) has HPDE 1-4 1 is for complete beginners, and I recommend everyone starts there, all the way to 4 which is one step under competing whether it be time trails or wheel to wheel. If you sign up in HPDE 1 you could be in 4 by the end of the day provided your instructor says you can move up. The different levels are just meant to group similar skill levels together so you don't get a beginner out slowing down amateur racers. The HPDE groups are non competitive lapping sessions only, it's just meant to get you on the track to learn how to drive your car near it's limits. I've seen a lead follow once at a NASA event and that was the first session of the day for the HPDE 1 group just so they could see what lines they should be taking. Otherwise it's you and an instructor(1,2) or you by yourself(3,4) on the track doing some hot laps. I also want to add, a properly setup NA miata will give a stock GTR a run for it's money on a road course. I had a stock miata on street tires, and I was keeping up with race prepped vettes, and a GTR through the corners without breaking a sweat, the straights were another story. Honestly if I just wanted a fun cheap car to tear around a track I'd build a miata, super fun and easy to drive.
